Exercise-induced pulmonary haemorrhage in horses – review
Exercise-induced pulmonary haemorrhage is a major cause of poor performance in the equine athlete. It is an important cause of exercise intolerance and results from strenuous exercise and pathophysiological changes in the equine lung and possibly in the airways. Endoscopic surveys of the respiratory tracts of horses after competitive events have shown that many horses experience exercise-induce...
متن کاملPre-Exercise Hyperpnea Attenuates Exercise-Induced Bronchoconstriction Without Affecting Performance
Whole-body warm-up exercises were shown to attenuate exercise-induced bronchoconstriction (EIB). Whether intense pre-exercise hyperpnea offers similar protection and whether this might negatively affect exercise performance is unknown. Nine subjects with EIB (25±5 yrs; forced expiratory volume in 1s [FEV1], 104±15% predicted) performed an exercise challenge (ECh) followed-after 30min-by a const...
متن کاملProgressive systemic sclerosis complicated by diffuse pulmonary haemorrhage.
A case is reported of progressive systemic sclerosis with pulmonary fibrosis which was complicated by recurrent haemoptyses due to diffuse pulmonary haemorrhage. We have found no other report of this association. The haemorrhage finally remitted after treatment was started with 40 mg prednisone daily, though previously spontaneous remissions had occurred.
متن کاملEpistaxis related to exercise-induced pulmonary haemorrhage in south African Thoroughbreds.
This study investigated if environmental factors had an effect on the incidence of epistaxis related to exercise-induced pulmonary haemorrhage (EIPH) among racehorses in southern Africa. Data covering the period 1986-2001 and involving 778 532 race runs were analysed. This included the following information: date of race, age, sex, name of breeder, trainer, distance, jockey, state of going, wei...
متن کاملAn endoscopic test for bit-induced nasopharyngeal asphyxia as a cause of exercise-induced pulmonary haemorrhage in the horse.
In their article on sudden death in racehorses, Lyle et al. [1] expressed the hope that their study would stimulate hypothesis-led investigations into possible causes. Currently, there is no consensus on the first cause of exercise-induced pulmonary haemorrhage (EIPH). But the 2 leadingmechanistic hypotheses are only at odds over the flimsiest of barriers – the pulmonary air/blood barrier. The ...
